More and more often you hear and read about college graduates opting for a career in internet marketing. Now, if you’re just about to graduate from college, or if you’re changing careers, don’t ask your college career counselor about this. They won’t have a clue as to what you’re talking about.
Internet marketing is a multi-million, of not billion dollar business. Yet very few people outside of the business have ever heard about it. You’ll get plenty of advice if you’re thinking of going into law, medicine, or engineering, but internet marketing? Gee, what’s that? Must be some kind of pyramid scheme. Yet, there are plenty of folks making as much as a lawyer, doctor, or engineer in the internet marketing field. Part of the problem, well actually the whole problem is that this job, business, career, whatever you want to call it, didn’t even exist ten years ago. Another part of the problem is outside of the industry itself, there are no conventional type schools where you can learn about this. Sure, there are business schools who have MBA’s with specializations in ecommerce, but that’s geared toward bigger companies selling their wares on the Internet. There’s virtually no mainstream information about what this business is or how to get into it as a single entrepreneur. Most successful internet marketers stumbled into the business on way or another. Many of the early ones were IT professionals who just happened to bump into someone else who made money online. Nowadays, people will read a blog or an article about someone making a killing doing things like building blogs and selling them or selling affiliate products and say, “I had no idea you could do that”. From that point forward, learning the ropes is mainly trial and error and a ton of snooping around the Internet trying to find good materials and websites to learn from. Still, having said all of this, there are a growing number of college graduates whose goal is to make money online. Desmond Ong and Jason Peiera are both college students who make four and five figures each and every month building and selling websites. There are plenty of others out there who are financing their way through college through affiliate marketing. So, is this the right career path for you? Honestly, there’s no test you can take that’s going to tell you that you should think about a career as a landscape gardener, a philosopher, or an internet marketer. The only way you’re going to see if this is for you is to jump into the deep end of the pool and see what the water’s like. Word of warning. Actually, you’re starting a business, not a career. Starting a career is difficult enough. Starting a business is many, many times more difficult and complex. If you are thinking about a career in internet marketing, don’t just try it for a month then give up. Stick with it for at least a year before you decide this is not for you. |
